Piney River Ranch Proposal | How We Pulled Off the Ultimate Surprise Proposal in Colorado
I’ve been keeping this secret for TWO YEARS.
And somehow…I never slipped. Not even close.
This proposal was extra special because it wasn’t just another client. It was my best friend, Erica.
About two years ago, Joey (now her fiancé 🥹) pulled me aside and said he wanted to propose. He started showing me different ring ideas. I was instantly all in and feeling so grateful to be in the loop to making sure this moment will be magical for two people I care deeply about.
If you know me, you know I’m fiercely protective of the people I love. So for someone to come into Erica’s life, make her feel completely safe, love her well, and truly become her partner…I was over the moon and never had to ever show my protective sister side. It has been blissful since day one and that is all anyone can ask for..for their daughter, friend, sister…!
I’ve basically been vibrating with excitement while keeping the world’s biggest poker face.

Fast forward about a year.
The ring had been picked. He saved for it.
Now it was time to figure out the how and where.
After tossing around ideas, we landed on one of my favorite Colorado locations: Piney River Ranch.
If you’ve never been, picture mountain peaks reflecting off the lake, quiet mornings, and one of the most peaceful settings you could imagine. Around lunch time the brewery/gift shop opens to really seal the deal of mountain town vibes without the hustle and bustle of everyone else. We secured the photography permit and decided on a private proposal just after sunrise before the crowds arrived.
It sounded perfect…
Except for one tiny problem.

Erica.
She is wonderfully spontaneous…which also means she rarely commits to plans until about 24 hours beforehand.
She’s also a complete workaholic. (Which…same.)
Trying to secretly get someone like that to commit to a sunrise mountain adventure weeks in advance is basically an Olympic sport.
So we got creative.

For about three months, everyone involved slowly started dropping little hints.
“We should get outside more.”
“Let’s take a mountain drive.”
“We should go paddleboarding.”
“Fresh mountain air sounds amazing.”
Nothing suspicious. Just tiny little ideas planted over time. Then life threw us another curveball.
One of Erica’s friends planned a trip into town on the exact weekend we had chosen. Instead of panicking…
We recruited her.
Now she was in on the secret too. Honestly, it worked out even better because it practically guaranteed Erica would finally take time off work. At one point, our backup plan was literally… Kidnap Erica and force her into the mountains. (Kidding…mostly.)

She had absolutely. No. Idea.
The funniest part? Literally minutes before Joey proposed, the manager at Piney River Ranch was giving us a tour and casually mentioned how this would be an incredible place to get married…or even propose.
Meanwhile, every single one of us is standing there trying not to laugh.
“Yep…sure is.”
“Now let’s walk down this dock…”

Watching your best friend realize what’s happening is something I’ll never forget. One second she was completely unsuspecting.
The next, Joey was down on one knee. Cue the happy tears. Cue everyone finally being able to breathe after keeping this secret for years.
These are the raw moments I just love capturing. We even managed to get a video of and I made a cute little reel to show you guys the precious excitement of their engagement that we successfully pulled off with her having not an OUNCE of a clue!

If you’re planning a surprise proposal and need someone who can help with more than just the photos, I’m your girl.
From choosing the perfect location and obtaining permits to helping coordinate the timeline, keeping the surprise under wraps, and making sure everything flows naturally, I’ll help you create a proposal your partner will never forget.
(And yes…I’ll absolutely help you recruit friends and family to keep the secret.)
